15 The 230th "Anniversary" of the Beheading of Louis XVI
1793 was another extremely dramatic year in the French Revolution. From the execution of Louis XVI in January to the Siege of Toulon in December, France was trapped in an unpredictable foreign war and a cruel, bloody civil war throughout the year. It witnessed the trial and execution of the king, the promulgation and shelving of the republican constitution, and saw the leaders and trendsetters of various political factions sent one after another to the guillotine. All of this seemed to be merely the prelude and preparation for the "Reign of Terror" in 1794. The French Revolution was an extremely important, complex, and deeply moving historical event. This episode provides a brief review of some major events in 1793, attempting to use this as a starting point for understanding the French Revolution.
