263 "Cold Politics, Hot Economy" for Six Hundred Years: Eye on East Asia During the Ming Dynasty

This episode is a recording of the activity at the "Lujiazui Book Club" on November 21. Associate Professor Kang Hao from the Department of World History at Shanghai Normal University and host Sha Qingqing engaged in a brilliant discussion revolving around the tripartite relationship between Ming Emperor Yongle Zhu Di, Ashikaga Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and Joseon Dynasty King Taejong Yi Bang-won, as well as the competition, rise, and fall of the three East Asian countries in the 13th-14th centuries. Additionally, from a historical perspective, the episode analyzes why Japan has long remained outside the Chinese tributary system; why Ashikaga Yoshimitsu broke tradition by actively requesting to pay tribute to the Ming Dynasty and being invested as the so-called "King of Japan"; and why the political and cultural traditions of China and Japan are "similar in form but different in spirit."
